What is college Rush?
Rush is a period of time for prospective members to visit a fraternity or sorority and gather information about its membership.  Generally rush begins in Spring and continues through the second or third week of the Fall semester. Spring Rush begins in October, and continues through the first couple weeks of the Spring Semester.

How does Rush work?
First and foremost, fraternities and sororities want to provide you with every bit of information you might want to know.  Rush is a great time to ask about a fraternity or sorority, so go prepared with questions.  Additionally it is good to meet as many of the members as possible during rush.  Getting to know the members is the best way to get a feel for the bond that they share. After you get the chance to meet a majority of the chapter and you have attended several functions, you will receive a bid from Rush Captains.  The bid is basically a formal invitation to join.

What happens after your accept your bid?
The Member program begins when rush is completed.  The class is assigned a Member Councilor who is charged with educating the new members about the fraternity or  sorority throughout the semester.  Additionally, each new Member picks a Big Brother or Sister who will be a mentor throughout the pledge semester.

Why Should You Rush?

Academics 
Fraternities and Sororities should place a very strong emphasis on the academics of its membership. They should be proud to rank among the top fraternities and sororities in GPA rankings. The house should offer various academic resources like a study room, house computer lab, teacher evaluations sheets and Ethernet. Fraternities and sororities should convey how important for new members to have a strong focus on academics, and require members to attend 12 study hours a week at an on-campus library. While going through the associate member program academics should always take top priority over any other activity because fraternities and sororities feel strongly about members keeping a strong GPA.

Social
The fraternity or sorority usually host some of the best parties on campus.  Every fall, a party should be planned to draw thousands of people.  Some have parties at the house about every other weekend, and host an out-of-town formal every semester.  Each semester, they can have mixers, date parties, barbecues, or tubing trips.  Some also have block seating for all home football and basketball games, and host pre and post game parties.

Leadership
Fraternities and sororities should always has a major presence in campus leadership roles. They should encourage new members to get involved in several campus activities, from clubs, to sports, to Interfraternal Council. Members can be involved in various organizations throughout campus. Some have an excellent reputation on campus as being a group of men and women who are extremely involved in all campus organizations.

Athletics 
Fraternities and sororities can be very competitive in intramural sports on campus. Some field teams in football, softball, basketball, soccer (indoor and outdoor), field hockey, golf, tennis, and volleyball. Many take sports teams very seriously and always compete on the level of league competition. Many have teams who consistently reach the playoffs in each of these sports and are a proven source of pride for the chapter. Many also like to get together on the weekends to play softball as a chapter or have a volleyball tournament.

What should a fraternity or sorority feel like?
A "home away from home," the house should provide a great place at which to stop by and watch TV, shoot pool, throw darts, or just hang out with your friends.

 

How should you sign up for Rush? 
Sign up with a rush captain before the next rush event, to make sure your name is added to the guest list for rush parties.
