Invitation Tips and Etiquette

Invitations Tips

Invitations not only inform your guests of the date, time, location and hosts of the wedding, they set the tone for your entire celebration. Your wedding invitation may also include the time and location of the reception. Mail announcement six weeks before the wedding and be sure to have your invitations weighed at the post office to determine the proper postage.

Printed Invitation Envelope Flaps

Save time while making sure undeliverable invitations are returned to you by having your outer envelopes printed with a return address. This will also ensure that those guests who want to send cards and gifts directly to your home will have the correct address.

Lined Inner Envelopes...

Choose a lined inner envelope to enhance the beauty of your invitation. A variety of colors are available to choose from for the perfect look.

Reception Folders and Cards...

Reception cards are used to inform guests of the location of the party, wedding reception, and/or dance. Since reception cards are enclosed with your invitation, mailing envelopes are not necessary. Reception cards use the same folding card as an informal and respond card.

Respond Folders and Cards...

Respond cards are used to help determine how many guests plan to attend your wedding or event. An accurate count is vital for preparing enough food, seating and other accommodations so ordering respond cards can actually save you money. Response cards are included with your invitation and returned by guests by the date indicated on the card (usually two weeks before the wedding/event.) Today, many cards are printed to allow guests to select an entree as well as indicate if they will be attending your celebration.

Respond envelopes are included free with your respond cards. They should be printed with the address of whoever will be tallying the guest count. As a convenience for your guests, be sure to include a stamp on each envelope.

Informal Notes...

Informal notes may be personalized with your names and used as thank you notes, gift enclosures, or for other correspondence long after the wedding so order plenty. All informal notes include single mailing envelopes. Informal notes use the same folding card as a reception and respond card.

Printed Thank You Note Envelope Flaps...

Save time by having your thank you note envelope flaps printed with a return address for a slight additional charge.

Now you can send us your wedding guest list and/or holiday card list online. No mailing - No Faxing. Simply type in the information and CC will give your envelopes their high quality hand addressed look.

Thank You Notes...

Writing notes of thanks is an etiquette must. Thank you notes are available blank for you to write your personal note of thanks, or you may choose to have them printed in order to acknowledge your wedding gifts quickly. Thank you notes only need to include a single mailing envelope.

Proper Etiquette for Addressing Your Envelopes

Outer Envelopes:
1. Use full names and formal titles. Do not abbreviate.
2. Do not use symbols. Spell out the word "and".
3. Do not use initials. Spell out all names.
4. Do not write "and family" if children are to be included in the invitation (See #2 of Inner Envelopes).
5. Use figures only when writing house numbers and zip codes.
Ex: 1747 Second Avenue South
6. Write out the words "Street", "Boulevard", "Avenue", etc.
7. Do not abbreviate state names.

Inner Envelopes:
1. Use full names and formal titles. Do not abbreviate.
Ex: Mr. and Mrs. Steven Johnson
2. Type the first names of children to be invited below the parents' names in order of age. Ex: Mr. and Mrs. Stevens, Lisa, Adam, and Julia
3. Omit children's names if you are planning an adult-only celebration.
4. If an invitation to a single guest extends to an unknown escort, address the inner envelope with your guest's name followed by "and Guest".  Ex: Miss Andrews and Guest

Single Outer Envelopes:
If you have selected an invitation that does not include an inner envelope or choose not to use your inner envelope, you may follow traditional addressing rules for outer envelopes or create a new way that works best for you.
1. For a traditional single outer envelope address, include the names of the children to be invited below the parents’ names as on a standard inner envelope.
2. Write “and guest” as it would have appeared on an inner envelope.

Mailing Your Invitations:
1. Mail all invitations at the same time, six to eight weeks before the wedding date, using first class postage. If you are enclosing response cards in your invitations, remember to include stamps on the return envelopes.
2. Assembled invitations often require additional postage. To avoid postage delays and returned invitations, take a completely assembled invitation to your post office to determine proper postage.
3. Be sure to include a return address on each outer envelope. Invitations returned by the post office will allow you to invite those individuals personally.
4. You’ve received the exact number of inner and outer envelopes you ordered.
